HTTPS is not a rival to TLS. It is HTTP running over TLS.

TLDR: TLS is the security protocol. HTTPS is the secure web address you see in the browser. SSL is the old name people still use, but real SSL should not be used. For example, if an online store handles 50,000 checkout visits per month, moving from older TLS settings to TLS 1.3 can reduce connection setup time and remove outdated cryptography, which helps both security and user trust.

What TLS actually does

TLS stands for Transport Layer Security. It protects data while it moves between two systems, such as a browser and a web server. Without it, anyone on the same network path may be able to read or alter traffic.

TLS gives you three core protections:

Encryption: outsiders cannot read the data in transit.

Authentication: the browser can confirm it is talking to the right site.

Integrity: attackers cannot silently change the data without detection.

This is why login pages, payment forms, admin panels, APIs, and dashboards need TLS. It is not just for banks. A simple contact form can expose names, emails, phone numbers, and private notes.

HTTPS is not the same thing as TLS

HTTPS means Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure. It is the web protocol HTTP protected by TLS. When you visit a site that starts with https://, the browser uses TLS to create a secure channel before normal web data moves across it.

So the relationship is simple:

HTTP: sends web data without built-in protection.

TLS: secures the connection.

HTTPS: HTTP sent through TLS.

It drives me crazy that people still say “install SSL” when they usually mean “enable HTTPS with a valid TLS certificate.” The wording is common, but it is technically wrong. In real audits, that loose wording can hide weak settings.

SSL is old and should be disabled

SSL, or Secure Sockets Layer, came before TLS. SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 are broken and unsafe. They should be disabled on every public server.

The name survives because people got used to it. Many vendors still sell “SSL certificates,” even though those certificates are used with TLS today. That naming habit causes confusion. The certificate is not what makes a site “SSL.” The secure session is created by TLS.

If your scanner reports support for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, or TLS 1.1, fix it. Those protocols are outdated. Modern browsers and security standards expect stronger versions.

TLS 1.3 vs TLS 1.2

TLS 1.2 is still common and can be secure when configured well. But TLS 1.3 is cleaner and safer by design. It removes many old choices that caused trouble for years.

Key differences include:

Faster handshakes: TLS 1.3 usually needs fewer round trips before data can move.

Forward secrecy by default: stolen server keys should not expose old traffic.

Fewer weak options: outdated algorithms were removed.

Simpler setup: fewer risky combinations are available.

Older TLS versions allowed too many choices. Some were strong. Some were not. Honestly, that created a mess for admins. One wrong cipher suite could turn a “secure” site into a weak one.

What the certificate does

A TLS certificate proves that a server is tied to a domain name. When you visit example.com, the browser checks whether the certificate matches that domain and whether it was issued by a trusted certificate authority.

The certificate does not encrypt traffic by itself. It supports identity checks and helps start the secure session. The actual encryption keys are created during the TLS handshake.

For public websites, use certificates from trusted authorities. Free options exist, and automated renewal is now normal. Letting a certificate expire is still one of the most avoidable outages on the web.

Which one should you use?

For a normal website, the answer is clear:

Use HTTPS everywhere. Do not keep mixed HTTP pages.

Prefer TLS 1.3. Keep TLS 1.2 only if needed for older clients.

Disable SSL completely. Also disable TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1.

Use strong certificates. Renew them before they expire.

Set HTTP Strict Transport Security. This tells browsers to use HTTPS only.

Mozilla’s server-side TLS guidance is a useful reference for current configuration levels [source: Mozilla]. It is worth checking before changing production servers.

A simple real-world example

Picture a small SaaS company with 12 employees and 8,000 active users. Users sign in, upload files, and manage billing details. If the site allows old SSL or weak TLS settings, an attacker on public Wi-Fi may have more room to attack sessions or force poor encryption.

With HTTPS using TLS 1.3, a valid certificate, and strict transport rules, the risk drops sharply. The browser can verify the domain. Traffic is encrypted. Old weak protocol paths are closed. Users also see the secure lock icon, which still matters for trust.

Bottom line

TLS 1.3 is the modern security layer. HTTPS is the web experience built on that layer. SSL is legacy language and legacy technology. If you run a site, API, app, or internal dashboard, configure HTTPS with TLS 1.3 where possible and remove old protocol support.
